Artist Statement
Meredith Stranges is a contemporary artist creating untypical portraits of animals confidently placed in their own local environment. Her work is unsentimental and direct, using realism yet twisting traditional portraiture on its edge. These are unique, thinking animals; in repose or action, each is individual, with personal intensity and inner focus. The surrounding spaces are distinct and important elements in the work, chosen to complement the subject.
Meredith likes to use large blocks of colour and a painterly style, and she enjoys experimenting with varied supports and preparations. She is inspired and challenged by the animals of Edwin Landseer, Jon Claytor, Lucien Freud, Gretta Gibney, Cecil Aldin, Ryohei Hase, Wesley Dennis and Herakut.
Meredith is pleased and proud to create unique commissioned works for patrons who wish to have an enduring record of their beloved companions. She enjoys taking the opportunity to exhibit her work in public spaces where people love and admire animals.
